Keynote: Dr Tony Wright - Issues and Contentions in Science Education
Addressing topical issues is becoming an increasingly important aspect of science teaching, but one that has had a minor role in the traditional science curriculum. This seminar will explore some of the ways of engaging students with the big conceptual ideas of science through the use of issues. Examples will include the use of global science activities such as the “pH of the Planet” project planned for the International Year of Chemistry in 2011.
Session 1: Robyn Bull - ‘Argumentation’: a process to enhance thinking skills and science understanding (Level P - 7)
Argumentation rather than arguing! – A workshop that explores how teaching argumentation skills and strategies develops students’ higher order thinking abilities and contributes to their science conceptual understanding.
Session 1: Sue Monteath - Chemistry
This hands-on workshop will explore pH values using indicators that are widely used around the world with participants learning about one of the fundamental properties of water. The experiment will be able to be used in a variety of science related topics including acids and bases, environmental chemistry, food science, physiology.
Session 2: Louise Maddock - Regional Manager Science (Gold Coast) - Blown Away by Science: Hands-on inquiry-based Energy and Change science activities that get you thinking . . .
Are you asking, “How can I provide fun, engaging activities for my students and still effectively implement an inquirybased approach that encourages higher order thinking and aligns with how my students learn?”
This workshop provides opportunities for participants to:
• Engage in fun, hands-on science activities that are aligned with the Energy and Change Essential Learnings • Experience an inquiry-based science approach • Learn strategies for incorporating higher-order thinking into lessons • Learn the ‘science-behind-the-fun’ of the concepts explored • Receive free resources to take back to the classroom
Session 2: Bradley Lambert & Sharen Warren - Biology
This workshop will review the requirements of EEIs in the Senior Biology, Chemistry and Physics syllabuses. The presenters will address potential difficulties inherent in this type of task including teacher and student management of the task, topic choice, drafting and meeting timelines. They will provide examples of how these issues might be dealt with and how this type of task can be scaffolded from Year 8 through to year 12.
